Key Concepts

  • One of the key concepts in Ayurveda that helps us to understand the benefits of journaling is Agni traditionally compared to fire.

  • Like fire, Agni is hot, sharp, luminous, light, subtle, & penetrating and had the power to transform.

  • For optimum health and happiness, Ayurveda places great emphasis on Agni and it’s abillity to process and transform everything we take in.

Agni has the abillity to process and transform.

Each day we receive far more than food. We take in conversations, information, experiences, expectations, memories, thoughts and feelings. All need to be processed.

  • Stages of processing include: Receiving → Recognising → Discerning (what we need, from what we don’t need) → Transforming → Assimilating (what we need) OR Releasing (what we don’t need).

Journaling supports this process by helping us to organise our thoughts, feelings, experience and relationships through writing and reflection.

What is useful can be transformed into knowledge and insight.

What we no longer need, we can release.

Through journaling, our inner experience becomes clearer and easier to observe. We can understand ourselves more deeply, uncover meaning and create greater clarity, balance and joy.

Agni & Ama

Incomplete processing has a consequence.

Agni is the power of digestion and transformation, while Ama is the residue of what has not been fully digested or assimilated. Just as undigested food can create Ama in the body, unresolved thoughts, emotions and experiences can leave a residue in the mind. According to Ayurveda, over time, this accumulation can cloud clarity, disturb balance and affect our mental health.
